Aromatherapy specialist Pat Princi-Jones on why you should have essential oils in your wellness arsenal.

How smell improves mood, energy and state of mind:

The ability of fragrances to affect mood has long been recognised. When inhaled, essential oil particles travel directly to the limbic region of the brain where behavioural and emotional responses are registered. A few drops of your favourite oil might just get you into a more balanced headspace. Just by simply inhaling scent particles influences neurotransmitters in the brain to help you think and feel a particular way.

Essential oils can both relax and revive. Oils with a predominantly stimulating effect will increase vitality. For example, rosemary’s potent camphor notes can improve alertness and boost memory. Basil is clarifying and helps alleviate mental strain while the D-limonene compound found in grapefruit and other citrus oils, is uplifting and reviving.
